What Pluto Describes

Pluto is thorough change - the kind that does not leave the previous arrangement available to return to. It is associated with power, transformation, compulsion and what is buried, and by house it marks the area of life where somebody takes things seriously enough that half measures are not on offer to them.

Discovered in 1930 and reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006, which changed nothing about its use in astrology. That is either a reasonable position - astrological meaning was never contingent on the IAU's naming conventions - or an illustration of how the tradition responds to inconvenient facts, depending on your view. Both readings are defensible and it is worth stating that plainly.

Reading It Without Melodrama

Interpretations of Pluto reach for language about obsession and destruction, which is dramatic and rarely accurate about any particular person. The moderate version is more useful: Pluto shows where somebody cannot be casual, and where change, when it comes, is structural rather than cosmetic.

By house it indicates the domain a person is most likely to rebuild entirely at least once - not necessarily traumatically, but not partially either.

The Slowest Placement

Pluto takes about 248 years to orbit and spends between twelve and thirty years in a sign, depending on the eccentricity of its orbit. Its sign is the broadest generational marker in a chart and says essentially nothing about an individual.

If a reading tells you something specific about your personality based on your Pluto sign, it is describing a group of hundreds of millions of people and the specificity is imaginary. The house is the only part of a Pluto placement that is about you.
