Soul Urge Number

Built from the vowels in your birth name: what you want, as distinct from what you do about it.

Use the name recorded at birth, including middle names. The calculation reads the vowels, so a shortened name gives a different number — and nothing you type here leaves your browser.

Everything here is worked out on your own device. Nothing you enter is sent to us, logged, or stored anywhere.

What The Soul Urge Number Is

The soul urge number, sometimes called the heart's desire, comes from the vowels in a birth name. Numerology treats vowels as the interior of a name and consonants as its exterior, so the vowels are read as motive: what a person actually wants, as distinct from what they do about it or how they appear while doing it.

That distinction is what separates it from the life path number, which is calculated from a birth date and describes the road rather than the reason for walking it. The two frequently disagree, and where they do is usually the interesting part - somebody whose life path points at building institutions and whose soul urge points at being left alone has a genuine tension to account for.

How It Is Calculated Here

Each vowel carries a value in the Pythagorean system: A is one, E is five, I is nine, O is six, U is three. The values are summed and reduced to a single digit, except for the master numbers eleven, twenty-two and thirty-three, which are conventionally left intact.

The letter Y is the part most calculators get wrong or quietly skip. The standard rule is that Y counts as a vowel only when it carries the vowel sound in a word with no other vowel - so it counts in Lynn and does not in Maya. This tool applies that rule literally, word by word, and shows you every letter it used so the arithmetic can be checked by hand.

Use the name recorded at birth, including middle names, since that is the convention the system is built on. A shortened or changed name produces a different number, and numerologists differ on what that second number means; there is no settled answer, and we would rather say so than pick one and present it as doctrine.

What To Make Of The Result

Numerology is a symbolic system, not a measurement, and the connection between a letter and a number is a convention rather than a discovery. Nothing about the arithmetic makes the interpretation true, and this tool does not pretend otherwise.

What it is good for is the same thing the rest of the site is good for: a prompt. Reading a description of a motive and deciding whether it fits is a useful exercise regardless of where the description came from, and the descriptions here are written to be recognisable rather than flattering.

Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, which is worth stating plainly given that the input is your full legal name.
