What The Soul Urge Number Is
The soul urge number, sometimes called the heart's desire, comes from the vowels in a birth name. Numerology treats vowels as the interior of a name and consonants as its exterior, so the vowels are read as motive: what a person actually wants, as distinct from what they do about it or how they appear while doing it.
That distinction is what separates it from the life path number, which is calculated from a birth date and describes the road rather than the reason for walking it. The two frequently disagree, and where they do is usually the interesting part - somebody whose life path points at building institutions and whose soul urge points at being left alone has a genuine tension to account for.

Each vowel carries a value in the Pythagorean system: A is one, E is five, I is nine, O is six, U is three. The values are summed and reduced to a single digit, except for the master numbers eleven, twenty-two and thirty-three, which are conventionally left intact.
The letter Y is the part most calculators get wrong or quietly skip. The standard rule is that Y counts as a vowel only when it carries the vowel sound in a word with no other vowel - so it counts in Lynn and does not in Maya.
