Birthstone Finder

Your birth month stone and your zodiac stone, which come from two different traditions and are often two different stones.

Everything here is worked out on your own device. Nothing you enter is sent to us, logged, or stored anywhere.

Two Traditions, Two Different Stones

There is no single birthstone list, and the disagreement is not minor. The modern list most jewelers use comes from a trade standard set in 1912 and revised since - it is a commercial standard rather than an ancient one.

Alongside it sit older traditional lists and a separate zodiacal list keyed to sign rather than month. They differ in several months, which is why this tool reports the month stone and the zodiac stone side by side instead of picking one and presenting it as the answer.

Why Month And Sign Do Not Line Up

Calendar months and zodiac signs are different divisions of the year. A sign runs from roughly the twentieth of one month to the twentieth of the next, so anybody born in the first three weeks of a month has a zodiac stone belonging to a different month's list.

That is not an error in either system. They are answering different questions, and a tool that merges them is manufacturing an agreement that does not exist.

On The Properties Attributed To Stones

The associations - garnet for constancy, amethyst for clarity, and so on - are folklore, and mostly folklore of fairly recent date. They are pleasant and they are not claims about the world.

No stone influences health, fortune or protection. Where a birthstone is genuinely useful is as a small piece of personal symbolism, which is a real thing to want and does not require the folklore to be true.
