How The Number Is Built
The digits of a birth date are reduced to a single figure, with each component reduced first and the three then combined. The master numbers eleven, twenty-two and thirty-three are conventionally left intact rather than reduced further.
That last rule is where calculators diverge. A tool that reduces eleven to two is following a different convention without saying so, and the two approaches give different answers for a substantial number of birth dates.
What It Is Meant To Describe
A general orientation - the kind of problem somebody is drawn toward and the road they tend to walk. It is the numerological equivalent of a sun sign in that it is the headline number, calculated from a date alone.
It is deliberately distinct from the soul urge number, which comes from the vowels of a birth name and describes motive rather than direction. The two frequently disagree, and where they do is the interesting part rather than a contradiction to be resolved.
What Kind Of Claim This Is
Numerology is symbolic all the way down. The value assigned to a digit is a convention rather than a discovery, and modern numerology was largely assembled in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries rather than inherited from antiquity.
That does not make it useless, and it does make it a different kind of thing from an astronomical calculation. A chart at least rests on real positions; a life path number rests entirely on the symbolism. Reading a description and deciding whether it fits is a useful exercise regardless, and we would rather say what the system is than dress it up.
