Sun Sign Calculator

Your sun sign, worked out from where the Sun actually stood on your birthday rather than from a fixed date table.

Everything here is worked out on your own device. Nothing you enter is sent to us, logged, or stored anywhere.

Why This Sometimes Disagrees With Other Sites

The sun does not change sign on a fixed calendar date. It crosses each boundary at a specific moment that drifts by roughly six hours a year and resets at each leap year, which is why the tables printed in magazines are approximations.

This calculator computes the sun's actual ecliptic longitude for the date and year you enter, using the low-precision solar algorithm from the Astronomical Almanac - accurate to about a hundredth of a degree, against the thirty degrees a sign occupies.

For most birthdays the two approaches agree. For anyone born within a day of a boundary they frequently do not, and in those cases the calculated answer is the correct one.

What A Cusp Actually Is

Being born on a cusp does not mean belonging to two signs. The sun is in one sign or the other at any given moment, and the boundary is a specific instant rather than a zone.

What is true is that the instant moves between years. Somebody born on 22 August might be Leo or Virgo depending on the year and the hour, which is why this tool asks for a birth year and tells you when your result sits close enough to a boundary for the time of day to matter.

Sites that describe cusp births as a blend of two signs are describing a psychological idea rather than an astronomical fact, and the two are worth keeping apart.

What Your Sun Sign Is Not

It is not your whole chart. It is one placement out of ten, and it became the popular one for a practical reason rather than an astrological one: it is the only placement a birth date settles without a birth time.

If a sun sign description has never fitted you, that is not unusual and it does not mean astrology has failed. It usually means your moon or your ascendant is doing more of the visible work, and those need a birth time to calculate.
