Mercury

Mercury governs how you think and communicate — the speed of your mind, the way you explain things, how you learn. It is the planet of everyday intelligence rather than deep wisdom.

Mercury's placement shows whether you think in pictures or arguments, quickly or thoroughly. Its retrograde periods are traditionally associated with review rather than disaster.

What Mercury Describes

Mercury is how a mind works: how it takes information in, how it sorts it, and how it puts it back out. Not intelligence, which astrology has no measure of, but style of thinking - speed, register, and what a person does with a half-formed idea.

Mercury in a fire sign thinks by asserting and finds out what it believes by hearing itself say it. In earth it thinks by testing, and is slow to state a position it has not verified. In air it thinks by comparing, and holds several possibilities open longer than is comfortable for everyone else. In water it thinks by impression, and often knows the conclusion well before it can produce the reasoning.

None of these is better. They are, however, frequently mistaken for each other's failures - the earth thinker reads as slow, the water thinker reads as vague, the fire thinker reads as overconfident.

Mercury Is Never Far From The Sun

Mercury orbits close to the Sun and never appears more than about twenty-eight degrees away from it in the sky. In chart terms that means Mercury is always in the same sign as the Sun or one of the two adjacent signs. There is no such thing as a Mercury opposite the Sun.

This is a genuine astronomical constraint rather than a rule of the tradition, and it is a good example of the two things being distinguishable. It also means a Mercury placement can sometimes be inferred approximately from a birth date - but only approximately, which is why this site calculates it rather than guessing.

Retrograde, Briefly

Mercury appears to reverse three or four times a year, which is an optical effect of Earth overtaking it on the inside track. Nothing physically reverses.

A natal Mercury retrograde - being born during one of those windows - is traditionally read as a mind that processes internally before it speaks, and that frequently understands something more thoroughly than it can explain on demand. It is one of the more benign placements in a tradition that is often unkind about retrogrades.
