The Fourth House: The Foundation

The fourth house sits at the bottom of the chart, and it covers home, family, roots, and the private base a person operates from. It is one of the four angular houses and carries correspondingly more weight than its subject matter suggests.

Its literal meaning is the house somebody lives in. Its useful meaning is what they are built on: the conditions of early life, the family pattern that was normal before it was examined, and the place they retreat to when they have nothing left to give.

It also traditionally covers the end of life, on the logic that the chart's foundation and its conclusion are the same point.

The Parent Question

Traditional texts assign one parent to the fourth house and the other to the tenth, and they disagree about which is which. Some assign the mother to the fourth, others the father, and the argument has never resolved.

The practical modern reading treats the fourth as the private, formative parent and the tenth as the public, standard-setting one, regardless of gender. That is more useful and it is a reinterpretation rather than the original claim.

Reading It

Planets in the fourth describe energy poured into a household rather than into a career, which is the same energy the tenth house would spend publicly. Mars in the fourth is not less driven than Mars in the tenth - it is driven at a different address.

A difficult fourth house frequently describes somebody for whom home was not a place of rest, and who has to construct the sense of a base deliberately in adulthood rather than inheriting it.
