What Mutable Means

Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces close each season, and they adapt. Their function is transition - taking something that exists and adjusting it to meet what is coming, which requires being comfortable with the thing not being settled.

Gemini adapts information, Virgo adapts systems, Sagittarius adapts scope, Pisces adapts to atmosphere. All four are more comfortable with change than the other modalities, and all four are correspondingly worse at holding a line.

This is the modality most people mean when they call somebody easygoing, and it is frequently not ease at all - it is a genuine indifference to arrangements that the other modalities are heavily invested in.

Where Mutable Struggles

Commitment to a version. Mutable signs revise decisions that were already adequate, and the revising can continue indefinitely because there is always a further adjustment available.

There is also a characteristic slipperiness under pressure. Where cardinal pushes and fixed refuses, mutable adapts - and adapting can mean agreeing to something with no intention of doing it, which is experienced by everyone else as evasion.

The third difficulty is that mutable signs frequently do not know their own position until asked to defend it, which makes them poor at holding ground they will later discover they cared about.

Two Mutable Signs Together

Enormous flexibility and nobody steering. Two mutable signs will accommodate each other endlessly, which is pleasant and produces a relationship where decisions get made by default rather than by choice.

The practical failure is logistical rather than emotional. Neither wants to be the one who insists, so things that require insistence - a lease, a plan, a difficult conversation with a third party - stay undone.

What helps is deliberately assigning responsibility rather than waiting for it to emerge, because it will not emerge.
