This person may have good reasons for some of their past behavior. They might have been overwhelmed, unsure of what they wanted or afraid to admit that the relationship was changing. Hearing those reasons could make their choices easier to understand. Understanding them, however, may bring back the old temptation to set aside what those choices cost you.
Perhaps you waited for a clear answer while they sent affectionate messages whenever they felt lonely. Perhaps you kept adjusting your expectations to avoid another argument. You do not need to deliver a list of grievances, but you should be able to say what happened from where you stood. An honest conversation has room for two accounts, even when they are difficult to hear together.
Try speaking plainly before you begin qualifying every sentence. “I felt confused when you said you wanted to see me but never made plans” is enough. You do not have to add three possible explanations for their behavior or assure them that they probably meant well. Let them respond to what you actually said. Their ability to do that matters more than their ability to describe their own regrets beautifully.
If they listen and take responsibility, you may leave with more clarity, whatever you decide next. If they turn your experience into a debate about exact wording, pay attention to how you feel. Are you learning something useful, or are you once again working to make your feelings acceptable to them? Your guardian angel’s warning is there to help you recognize that familiar strain before you agree to another round of it.
