Other People’s Confidence in You Is Not an Unlimited Resource
People trust you with serious things because you usually follow through. At work, you are the person who notices a deadline slipping and quietly prevents a problem. At home, you remember the appointment, handle the bill, or check that everyone has a plan. Some of it is so routine that nobody asks whether you have room for it.
Look closely at the next responsibility coming your way. Is it an opportunity you want, with support and recognition that match the work? Or is someone handing you another problem because they know you are capable of solving it? The difference matters. Being good at something does not mean it should permanently belong to you.
Try asking what will come off your schedule if you accept a new task. If the request comes from someone close to you, explain what you can realistically do and where they will need another plan. You can be generous and still set terms. A direct conversation now is kinder than agreeing reluctantly and growing resentful over the next several months.
Pay attention to the response. Someone who values your contribution may be disappointed but willing to share the load. Someone who insists that only you can handle it is asking you to keep paying for their convenience. Their reaction helps you decide what to keep.
