Water
Water is the element of emotion and undercurrent. Water signs read atmosphere before words, remember how things felt long after the details fade, and attach deeply once they attach at all.

How It Thinks
Water thinks through impression and association. Its conclusions often arrive before its reasoning does — which is why water is frequently right and frequently unable to explain why.
In Relationships
Water loves completely and needs emotional safety to do it. It gives more than it asks for, and its recurring lesson is boundaries — staying itself while caring that much.
At Work
Water does its strongest work where empathy or depth is the actual skill: care, psychology, the arts, research, anything requiring you to sense what is not being said.
Compatibility
Water pairs naturally with earth, which holds it, and with other water signs, who understand without translation. Fire can excite or scorch it; air can clarify or feel cold.

What Water Actually Describes
Water is the element of atmosphere. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces register the emotional weather of a situation before they register its content - who is uncomfortable, what is not being said, which way a room has shifted. That information arrives first and arrives whether or not it was wanted.
This is usually described as sensitivity, which understates it. It is closer to a different order of perception: water is reading a channel that the other elements are not consistently receiving, and it is frequently right about what it picks up.
The corresponding difficulty is that the channel has no volume control. Water absorbs the mood of a room it merely walked through, and a substantial part of what a water sign feels in company did not originate with them.
The Three Water Signs
Cancer is cardinal water: it initiates care. The energy goes into establishing attachment and defending it, and Cancer is the most openly protective of the three.
Scorpio is fixed water: it concentrates. The energy goes down rather than out, into intensity and permanence, and very little of it shows on the surface.
Pisces is mutable water: it dissolves boundaries. The energy diffuses, which produces both the compassion and the difficulty maintaining a clear line between self and other.
What Water Costs
Proportion. A mood is experienced as a fact about the world rather than as a passing state, and decisions made inside one can be difficult to defend the following week. Water is not more emotional than other elements so much as less able to hold emotion at a distance while it passes.
There is also a characteristic indirectness. Water frequently expects to be understood without having said the thing, and reads the failure to intuit it as a failure of care. That is a genuinely unfair expectation and it is placed on partners constantly.
The third cost is porousness in company that does not deserve it. Water attaches quickly and forgives readily, which is admirable and also how water signs end up in arrangements that everybody around them could see was a mistake.
Water With The Other Elements
Water and earth steady each other. Earth gives water a shape to occupy; water gives earth access to the register it does not natively read. It is the least dramatic and most durable elemental pairing.
Water and fire is a mismatch of processing speed - fire has finished with the argument before water has finished feeling it. This is workable only when fire stops describing water as excessive and water stops describing fire as callous.
Water and air is a mismatch of register: air asks for the feeling in words, which is the one form water cannot easily supply. The translation cost is real and the pairing is not doomed by it, but it does not get cheaper on its own.
If You Have No Water
Emotional undercurrent is something you are told about rather than something you sense. Rooms change and you find out afterwards. This is not coldness, and the people who assume it is are misreading a perceptual difference as a moral one.
The accommodation is simple and slightly unfashionable: ask outright. People with little water are frequently better at handling a stated problem than water signs are, and worse at noticing an unstated one. Asking directly converts the second situation into the first.
